The last Vought-built version of their F4U Corsair series to see service during the Second World War was the F4U-4 shown here, however most were built after the conflict, with a total of 2,357 units completed. With a 2,100 hp engine, the aircraft could attain a maximum speed of 446 mph. (RWP)
Preparing for takeoff from a US Navy carrier, without benefit of a catapult, is a Vought F4U-1D Corsair fitted with an external drop tank. Twenty-four US Navy aviators and seventy US Marine Corps aviators became aces flying the F4U in the Pacific against the Japanese.
