Preparing for takeoff from a US Navy carrier, without benefit of a catapult, is a Vought F4U-1D Corsair fitted with an external drop tank. Twenty-four US Navy aviators and seventy US Marine Corps aviators became aces flying the F4U in the Pacific against the Japanese. The F4U series is credited with 2,140 enemy aircraft during the Second World War. (NNAM)
